The Steam Engine - It turns out that the city of Glasgow in Scotland is home to one of the greatest geniuses there was. Born on January 19, 1736 and growing up on a small farm near Greenock, James Watt’s name will be forever ingrained in history books as perhaps being one of the main reasons global society had developed into what it is today.

Without James Watt our entire way of life would have been very different! - James Watt made vast improvements to the original steam engine which allowed it to be reduced in size and to output more power. This meant the steam engine could make its way into factories which kick started the industrial revolution.

Scotland has over 900 Islands - There are four main groups of islands, namely the Inner Hebrides, the Outer Hebrides, Shetland and Orkney. The Isle of Skye, for example, is one of the Scottish islands known as a place absolutely bursting with natural beauty.

Orkney a set of islands located off Scotland's northeast coast has only actually been Scotttish since 1500, it was settled as early as the 8th century AD by Norse farmers. A couple of centuries later, the Islands' resources and fertile farmland had attracted enough settlers from Norway to make Orkney subject to Norwegian rule.

By the mid-9th century, however, the three islands that constituted Orkney were conquered by Denmark through force. With time though, Orkney’s cultural ties with Norway grew less discernible and in 1468 Orkney was handed over as dowry to King Christian I upon his daughter’s marriage to James III of Scotland.

Unicorns exists in Scotland - Well Kind of the Unicorn is Scotlands national animal - What's that? There is no unicorn to be seen here? That doesn't sound like Scotland to us! And who cares if it doesn't exist, the unicorn is surely a wonderful choice. After all.

The oldest tree in Europe - There’s a tree in Fortingall that’s said to be over 3,000 years old. Some say it’s actually 5,000; either way, that’s quite an impressive age for any tree! A local legend has it that Roman Centurion Pontius Pilate was conceived under the shade of this yew tree (whether this is true or not we have no idea).

You Measure Whisky In Drams - Have you ever heard the word dram? Not like a fifth rhythmic pattern, but a tiny measure of alcohol for your drinking pleasure. In Scotland, having a dram means to have a small amount of whiskey or other spirits. The term has now made its way over to the United States where it is thankfully accepted in law as an actual term used to describe any establishment that serves alcoholic drinks.
