There are many things to do and see in the Lofoten Islands
- The Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) is one of the most spectacular natural wonders in the world and one that as been photographed many times adorning many canvas prints for sale, and there are few places better to see this phenomenon than Lofoten during its winter season. The prime period for viewing these lights is between September and April.
- See the Midnight Sun - From late May to mid-July the sun doesn’t set. The glow of the midnight-sun mixes with twilight and sets off stunningly beautiful 24-hour days of golden light. Photographers are known to capitalize on such a fantastical occurrence, people are blown away by the magic of being able to experience the magic trick of not having to say goodbye to their beloved at dusk—but instead everyone enjoys the couple of months in Lofoten under an infinite sky with no sunset.
- Hike the Lofoten Islands - Lofoten is a hiker’s paradise, known for its spectacular mountains which, at certain times of the year when ice doesn't cover them, are said to be climbable. There are several marked trails winding around and over these mountains that lead hikers to mountain cabins - some open to visitors who use the cabins as points from where they can continue their hikes in the most beautiful scenery imaginable.
- Surfing - Yes!! even in the Arctic - Stunningly beautiful, bathed with Arctic swells and empty, Lofoten’s west coast is nothing short of a rare treat for surfers. A haven for surfers for over half a century is Unstad beach, the area demands extreme versatility on the part of those who venture out here to catch this long reach break. Surfing in Lofoten means surfing in thick wetsuits (temperatures are around 2-16 Celsius)
- Visit the villages of Hamnoy, Sakrisoy and Reine and see the shorted named village in the world Å, Reine for instance has been named one of the top ten most scenic villages in the world.

The museum's main focus is on three ancient ships dating back to the ninth century and partially preserved as a result of having been buried for many years in bogs.
